On 1st May the concrete was pumped into the trenches (which contained the steel rod beams) from what looked like a giant elephant’s trunk.
We were then ready for the beam and block floor to go in, which was all done by 25th May. Several courses of blockwork were laid first. The concrete beams (which were shaped like an upside down T) were then laid across the house resting on the perimeter blockwork using the fork lift, then concrete blocks were laid loose in between them, and then grouted on top.
At last, on 29th May, the first external bricks were laid. Four courses of bricks were laid up to floor level with the damp proof course incorporated after the first course. It was exciting to see that our chosen bricks looked even better than we had hoped.
