Once the ground floor brickwork was finished, the bricklayers moved on to work on the chimney stack, which they started on 9th August. This would incorporate one of the soil pipes in the cavity. The oak framers then came back on site on the 20th to commence the second stage of the oak framing; this section would eventually be our bedroom and the “minstrel’s gallery” section.
We had chosen to have a vaulted ceiling in our bedroom, and the purlins (heavy oak horizontal beams to support the roof) were slotted into place at this time. By the end of August the dormer window construction had also been done, as well as most of the oak pegs which were hammered in to secure the green oak frame joints.
Once the frame was complete the remaining infill panels were put in, with weatherproofing material on the outside walls.
